Help & Setup
Connect Unsuspendly to your own Anki collection, understand the preview before you run it, and solve common setup problems.
Before your first run: keep Anki’s automatic backups enabled and make a fresh collection backup. Preview and undo reduce risk, but they are not a replacement for a backup.
Requirements
Computer
macOS 13.5 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel, or 64-bit Windows 10/11.
Anki
Desktop Anki with the free AnkiConnect add-on. Anki must be open while Unsuspendly reads tags, previews searches, or changes cards.
Lecture file
A PDF or modern PowerPoint .pptx file that you have permission to process. Legacy .ppt files are not supported.
Internet and deck
An internet connection is required for concept identification and licensing. You also need a tagged deck already in your own Anki collection.
First-run setup
- Back up Anki. In Anki, confirm automatic backups are enabled and create a fresh backup before using any collection-changing automation.
- Install AnkiConnect. In Anki, open Tools → Add-ons → Get Add-ons, enter code
2055492159, install, and restart Anki. - Open Anki and Unsuspendly. The onboarding connection check should report that AnkiConnect is responding.
- Choose the destination deck. Select the deck Unsuspendly should search and unsuspend within.
- Fetch live tags. Fetch tags from the selected deck while Anki is open. Re-fetch after an AnKing update, a tag change, or switching decks.
- Choose optional organization. Per-lecture subdecks, lecture note tags, and sync-after-run are optional and off by default.
Your first AI-assisted upload automatically starts the device-bound 14-day trial, with up to 10 processed lecture uploads. No payment card is required to start it.
Upload, preview, and run
- On Upload Lecture, add one or more PDF/PPTX files and confirm each lecture title. Subject and study objective are optional organization labels for the batch.
- Start derivation and leave the upload screen open until it reports that the searches and card counts are ready. Derivation and counting do not change Anki.
- Open Review & Run. Read the proposed searches and real per-search card counts. Use Show in Anki when you want to inspect the exact cards behind a row.
- Edit or remove any search that is too broad, too narrow, or unrelated. An edit makes the old preview stale; run the read-only check again before unsuspending.
- Press Unsuspend only after the updated preview looks right. The completion summary distinguishes matched cards from cards that this run newly unsuspended.
What leaves your computer
Unsuspendly extracts text from the selected lecture file locally. The extracted text, lecture title, and any subject/objective you provide are sent through Unsuspendly’s Cloudflare-hosted service to Google Gemini for concept identification. The original PDF or PowerPoint file is not uploaded by Unsuspendly.
Your Anki cards, notes, decks, tag vocabulary, and review history are accessed through local AnkiConnect and are not sent to Gemini. Derived searches, concept snapshots, run history, affected card identifiers, settings, and local usage insights are stored on your computer. If you enable sync after a run, Unsuspendly asks your local Anki installation to sync through the provider you configured; Unsuspendly does not receive that synchronized collection.
For provider details, metadata, retention, and privacy choices, read the Privacy Policy. Do not process patient information, restricted assessments, or lecture material you are not permitted to send to an AI provider.
History and undo
Each completed run is stored in History. Undo offers two different scopes:
- Newly unsuspended cards resuspends only cards that were suspended immediately before this run and became active because of it.
- Full matched set resuspends every card the run matched, including cards that were already active before the run.
If the run created lecture organization, its undo also reverses that organization. Later manual edits, sync conflicts, deleted data, or changes from another add-on can limit what an undo can restore, so retain normal Anki backups.
Step 1 yield suspension is a separate, confirmed action scoped to the originating run (or a lecture subdeck where available). Its own undo restores exactly the cards that action newly suspended.
Deck compatibility
Unsuspendly is built and tested primarily around the AnKing Step tag hierarchy. It can scope matching to Step 1 or Step 2 tags and can prefer or exclusively use selected top-level AnKing subtags.
You can select another tagged deck and fetch its live tags. Results depend on that deck’s tag structure and consistency; sparse or inconsistent tags cause more text-search fallback. Unsuspendly does not provide, bundle, or sell any flashcard deck or card content.
AnKing low-yield tags are available only in compatible Step 1 tag sets. If those tags are absent, the yield controls do not apply.
Expected limitations
Unsuspendly produces a proposed first-pass search plan. It does not guarantee every relevant card or exclude every irrelevant card.
- Concept extraction can omit a concept or judge its breadth differently across runs.
- Word-overlap matching may choose a related tag when terms share words, especially with negation.
- A class name and its member drugs or diseases may not match when they share no vocabulary.
- Quoted card-text searches can miss cloze-formatted phrases; broad text searches can also return unrelated cards.
- Scanned/image-only slides with little extractable text may not provide enough input.
Use the real counts and Show in Anki inspection instead of treating the proposal as an autonomous study decision.
Troubleshooting
Unsuspendly says Anki or AnkiConnect is unavailable
Open desktop Anki, install AnkiConnect using add-on code 2055492159, restart Anki after installation, and run the connection check again. AnkiConnect responds only while Anki is open.
All searches match zero cards
Confirm the destination deck is the exact deck containing your cards. Fetch live tags again, and check that the Step 1/Step 2 scope or selected subtags are not excluding the deck’s current tags. Open one proposed query in Anki to verify the collection side directly.
A proposed search matches far too many cards
Use Show in Anki to inspect the exact set. Remove the row, narrow its query, or change tag-scope settings, then run the read-only preview again. Do not approve a broad row simply because the overall lecture total looks plausible.
The lecture has little or no extracted content
Confirm the file is a readable PDF or .pptx. Image-only scans may need text recognition before upload, and legacy .ppt files should be exported to .pptx or PDF. Check that you have permission before converting or processing the material.
The preview changed after I edited a search
That is expected. Counts from the previous query are stale after an edit or removal. Use the preview/check action again so the summary reflects the exact searches currently on screen.
I need to report a bug
Include the app version, macOS/Windows version, the step that failed, the exact visible error, and whether AnkiConnect was connected. Do not email lecture files, patient information, payment-card details, an Anki database, API keys, or a full license key.
Billing, cancellation, and refunds
Billing and cancellation
Manage or cancel your subscription through the Stripe customer portal, using the email address you subscribed with. The app's Settings tab links straight to it. Cancellation stops future renewal and ordinarily takes effect after the paid billing period, as described in the Terms of Service.
For an incorrect charge or a service problem, email support promptly. Refund eligibility and mandatory consumer rights are described in Refunds and consumer rights.
Still need help?
Email support@unsuspendly.com. Include the app and operating-system versions plus a concise description of what happened. Never send a full license key, lecture file, Anki database, payment-card information, password, API key, or patient information.
